JSON webservices - Recent Earthquakes

Hello folks,

The "recent earthquakes" webservice takes north, south, east, and west parameters. What exactly do those represent? Latitude / longitude values?

I'm confused because the example:

http://api.geonames.org/earthquakesJSON?north=44.1&south=-9.9&east=-22.4&west=55.2&username=demo

returns earthquakes with longitude values between 91 - 156, and latitude values -8 - 38.

Any help clarifying how this service is used would be much appreciated.

Thank you!
