adm1 Australia

Hi!

When I use webservices to get admin divisions of Australia, I get things like "New South Wales"

But when I do a local query for the adm1 of australia, I get "State Of New South Wales" ...

My local dump of geonames has "State Of New South Wales" as the name and "New South Wales" is in the alternative names...

I was wondering why that was, and if there was any logic you could provide on selecting the proper name?

Thanks!!!

The table alternatenames has language codes and flags 'isPreferred' and 'isShort'. In your case you are probably looking for an English variant, if several variants for the same language are available you probably want the one marked as 'isShort'.
