Offline reverse geocoding on street level possible?

Hi all,

I'm looking for an offline solution to reverse geocoding at street level.

Would be used on Windows mobile devices to get a list of streets in the surrounding of the current location.

All ideas and comments more than welcome!

Kind regards,

Thanks a lot for the quick reply David!

but I really need an offline solution...or did you mean it might be possible to use a local database for it?

Could be possible if I can find a windows mobile DB that can support it.

Kind regards,

Gisgraphy is a framework, and you can use it offline

just download the last version (Snapshot). then choose the countries, the dataset (openstreet map or geonames or both) and the features you want to import,
and it will download, import the data, and expose 3 webservices (geocoding, fulltext, and find near by) that you can use offline. i don't know your needs but it is an offline solution.services.gisgraphy.com is just a demo of the framework.

Tiger can also help you.

Hope it helps

Re:Offline reverse geocoding on street level possible?

David: Jochen is asking for a solution to run on a WINDOWS MOBILE device. I really don't see how gisgraphy is optimized for this situation. If you want to advertise your project on this forum at least try to answer the original question.

Jochen: This is going to be difficult. I am not aware of a solution that can easily run on this kind of device. It would need a lot of optimization effort and would probably not worth the pain as online access is getting cheaper and cheaper.
If I were you I would try to focus on online access and possibly have a cache function for offline situations hoping that the device was previously online at the same location.

Best

hi marc

my goal was not to advertise. by offline, i have understood "not online" (hosted by Jochen himself) and i thought Jochen was searching for a service that will be called from phone device, not hosted by the device itself.

sorry for the inconvenence
