How to get from user entered address to real address?

I'm working on a little tool that lets you enter an address and see some stats around it - one of the problems I'm having is I don't know how to get the lat/lon of an address - or how to go from a user entered address like "15 e 40th st new york" to extract the state, zip, etc from that.

Can you help me figure out the answer to these two issues - first, getting the lat/lon for the user entered address, and second getting back the canonical version of the address?

Best,
Will

It is called 'geocoding' a service not yet offered by GeoNames on address level. There are a couple of other providers that offer this service, just use the search engine of your choice to find them.
