Hi geekeasy

I have started with a first draft for a user manual :
http://www.geonames.org/manual.html

Adding a place is really simple, go to the location where you want to add a new place, press the 'new' button on the controll panel on the left to the map and click on the map. Edit the form and press 'save'.

As for the guidelines: make sure the place does not already exist and try to find the best feature code.

Regards,

Wow, anything?

So if I wanted to put "Adam Katz's house" on there that would be appropriate?

I personally wouldn't want to do that, but I think that some of the user's of my website would. And someday soon, I'm going to start forwarding them your way to add things too.

Hmmm....

The "add name" button tells me to login. Should I have to log in to add a new place? I don't have to log in to edit one, do I?

Re:Adding places

Yes you are right in both cases and I have update the user manual.

1. you have to be logged in to add a new place name. For most edit functions you don't have to be logged in. For some edit functions (depending on the relevancy of a place name) you have to be logged in.

2. If "Adam Katz's house" is a well known place name then it is ok to add it. If it is an unkown place name, then other projects such as tagzania.com are more suitable for it.

Re:Adding places

Another question about adding places.

Is there a way to jump directly to a GPS location when viewing the map.

If I want to add a new places, and I have the exact coordinates, it's a real pain in the ass to scroll around the map and try to pinpoint it.

I'd much rather just type in the coordinates and jump right there.

Cheers,
-Adam

Hi Adam

This is true. I think the easiest way for us is to make the search form in the right upper corner cleverer. You could then type the lat,lng in the search field and it will bring you to the desired location.

What do you think about this? Would this help you?

Hi Adam

I forgot to say, the lat/lng parser in the search field in the right upper corner of the map view has been implemented in the mean time. Just type latitude and longitude separted by blank or comma and press enter. The map will then move to the desired location.

Cheers
