Create an alternative or local provider of GeoNames WebServices?

Hello,
I come to geonames via Geosetter
I am discovering the impressive power of the GeoNames DB. Great works and thanks to all contributors!
I've seen there is a possibility to download the DB and even import it in a RDBMS (mySQL, Postgre, MS-SQL, etc) according to the FAQ. Great!

On the other side, I see open sources clients to use the Web Services.

Now, I am thinking about the next step: is there any project on using the same web services, but hosted in other place, typically locally?
I mean, instead of using the web services ws.geonames.org, it should be possible to download the DB and define a similar web service, and then only change the WS adresss in his final application. The goal is to avoid change in client application which are using ws.geonames.org.

I would have the advantage of limiting the access to ws.geonames.org which often times out.
And the main use case I see would be actually to use that on his own computer, e.g. on a laptop off-line, without (free) internet access.

What do you think?

[I cross post the idea with Geosetter

GeoNames is focusing on the data. Sure it would be nice to release the code as well, but it would cost too much time and resources so that it is better to stay focused on what is really important. The release of the client software was a test to see whether it would speed up development, but it did not, at the contrary.

Best

Hi

You can try gisgraphy which is a framework to import Geonames Data (and openstreetmap) and to use it via two webservices : geoloc and fulltext.

the project home page is http://www.gisgraphy.com ,and you can see a demo here : http://services.gisgraphy.com

Hope it helps
