Cities1000 clarification

Hi,

I am using the cities1000 file since I only need city/town/village info. I have two questions about it:

1. Is it updated daily along with the allCountries and other files?
2. It only contains populated places that have a population. Is that correct? In that case a place like Ewell (a village in the UK, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ewell) which geonames does not seem to have a population for would not be included in the file?

Thanks!

I have just noticed the answer to one of my own stupid questions -- cities1000 does seem to be updated daily, as the "last modified" column on the Downloads page indicates.

A quick comment on the cities1000 file -- if you want to know the name corresponding to the admin1 column (i.e. the state/canton the populated place is in), it seems like it is a bit of a pain since you don't have the rows with feature code ADM1.. Thus for the US and cantons in CH you do actually need to import the country dumps and read the state/canton names from there (or compile them yourself). Not a big deal, just a comment.

The cities100 files contains the largest cities, if we don't know the population then we cannot include it except if it has a relevant featurecode like capital or seat of admin division.
If you see missing population of an important city, please add it and the next day it will be in the file.

Re:Cities1000 clarification

Hi Marc,

Thanks for your reply. I am trying to decide if I should use the cities1000 file, or import individual country files/allCountries file. From my application's point of view, having *too* much populated places data can bring certain disadvantages. The cities1000 file seems to have coverage I am ok with, since the populated places without a population (which are not included) seem to be very small/not well known places. I guess I need to be "reasonably sure" that most towns and cities are included, and I am not so worried if very small towns/villages are not there.

So my question is, do you have any idea about the kinds of populated places that have no population? Is it probable that some fairly large, well-known town/city is missing? I know this is probably hard to tell, but I thought you might have some intuition about the probability of places not having a population (since you are probably very familiar with the data sources that were used to add the populations of places, for example).

Thanks for any hints that would make my decision easier.

I don't think too many cities are missing from the cities1000 files. Of course it depends on the region you are looking at. I can imagine that there are some huge cities in China or India I have never heard of and that are missing population data.
