collectively exhausetive set of populated places

Hi, I understand that due to lack of data, it is not possible to have a set of populated places which are collectively exhaustive. However, is it still possible to get a set of populated places which are mutually exclusive?

In other words, is it possible to get a group of "Feature Code"s among PPL,PPLA,PPLC,PPLG,...,PPLX which would give non-overlapping sets of populated places? In other words, is it possible to zero out double calculation?

thank you, Guney

Hi Guney

I am afraid I don't understand your question and in any case I don't think there is a clear answer for it. GeoNames is a simplified representation of the real world and not a mathematical construct. As a representation of the real world is has a lot to due with historical and political issues that are not easy to model in a strictly mathematical context.

Best

Re:collectively exhausetive set of populated places

Hi Marc,

Sorry for the confusion. What I am interested in is locations with non-zero populations. However, my understanding is that, some locations appear under several labels such as PPL, PPLA, and PPLX. If that is the case, I'd prefer to cover them only once.

So, I am curious if there is a set of labels that would cover the earth as much as possible while identifying any location only once and not more. If yes, what would be the set of labels that would give the largest, non-overlapping population.

I hope that clarifies my question a little bit. Thank you, Guney

There is no place with duplicate entries for the codes ppl, ppla and pplx. I don't think this would make sense.
