Township of ________

Hello,

I have noticed quite a lot of entries in the database for townships in US states that are all named "Township of XYZ". I'd like to add alternate names for these such as "XYZ Township". I can create a list of geonameid -> name mappings in whatever format is necessary to ease adding them to the alternate names database. What's the best way to proceed here?

Best,
Mike

Re:Township of ________

I've made a table in the same format as alternateNames.txt (except for missing the first column as I'm not sure of the proper numbering convention for assigning altnameid's) consisting of the rearranged names. It's attached. Could it please be added to the database?

Cheers.

Re:Township of ________

Hello all! I am not sure if this question belongs to this thread, but I think it is better to post it here before creating a new thread:

Are these two the same (I happen to live there)?
http://www.geonames.org/5104504/secaucus.html
http://www.geonames.org/5104508/town-of-secaucus.html

If they are, shall we remove one of the them and add it as "alternate name" to the other?

If they are not the same, could you please explain why (or point me to where I can learn the reason)?

Thank you!

Alex

Both entries are from the USGS. The first is the populated place (USGS id 880457, usgs feature 'ppl') and the second the administrative division (USGS id 885392, usgs feature 'civil').
The populated place is the group of buildings where people are living, the administrative division is the political entity. I don't know about Secaucus, but in many places the political entity is larger and also includes some smaller neighbouring cities that are there own cities if you look from the airplane or satellite but politically they belong to the larger city.

Best

Re:Township of ________

Well, in the Secaucus case they share the same borders. In other words: "Town of Secaucus" and "Secaucus" represent different things, but they happen to cover exactly the same area.

This is similar to the issue with "New York County" and "Manhattan". They are different entities that happen to have the same physical border.

Thank you for the clarification Marc!
