Modifications and updates

We aim to have a local copy of the DB available for times when we are unable to access the internet. I would like to run updates from modifications-yyyy-mm-dd on a daily basis. I assumed that earlier days' modifications files would still be available, at least for a week or two, in the event of our daily update jobs not being run for a whatever reason for a few days, but there seem to be only the previous day's file. Is this by design?
Would it be possible to keep a backlog of the files, at least for a short while to allow for catch ups?
