Is geonameid constant for a given city/area if state/region or country change ?

What if the city changes country or State ? Does the geonameid remains constant ?

I am planning on using over 1000 population cities and store the country/region/city combination user selected. I am trying to figure out how to handle if a city is moved to different state/region or heck new country.

Can I go by geonameid or is there a better practice members used before ?

Thanks for your help

The geoNameId is immutable and does not change. It is meant to be an id, since names of cities change over time.
