the hourly limit of 2000 credits ...

I think there is something wrong with the creditscount. I know http://www.geonames.org/export/credits.html so I cannot say exactly how much credits my script uses for 1 photo. But now I was thrown out at the 1st photo of an album. So 5 minutes after the hour, it is sure I couldn't have consumed 2000 credits. Maybe my username is abused.

I also would like to suggest, to make a larger time limit. I am doing from time to time calculations of a photo album, and I fear I cannot do in 1 run 100 photos. Yesterday I calculated an album with 7 photos a few times and then I was blocked.

I find valuable info in this thread and the quoted links, but it is a little bit less to for me. Before I ask for details, I ask generally.

Hasn't anyone tried to write a full working script to create an own local database or maybe with a web-access to a local webserver?

Since the server is most times unreachable in the last time, I would like to install it locally with my Linux server (Opensuse 11.1), but it looks like this is not so easy.

Aw:Nearest postal code and country

I am not sure, if I understand your question.

Please look at the map: http://local.google.com/maps?q=48.15667,12.82944&t=h&ie=UTF8&om=1&ll=48.156467,12.847652&spn=0.155282,0.307617&z=12

The coordinates belong to Germany and are part of the _town_ Burghausen. Geonames counts it to a _small_ Austrian village named Ach, which is across the river.

I understand, that it is very difficult to code.

I have a similar problem with:

47.83889 13.01500

This is a part of the city Salzburg.
http://local.google.com/maps?f=q&hl=de&geocode=&q=47.83889,13.01500&ie=UTF8&ll=47.838913,13.015022&spn=0.03906,0.076904&t=h&z=14&iwloc=addr&om=1
It is a maadow on a smal lake called Salzachsee.

http://ws.geonames.org/findNearbyPostalCodes?lat=47.83889&lng=13.01500 shows Hagenau, which has a zip-code 5101

If you search for 5101
http://www.geonames.org/postalcode-search.html?q=5101&country=AT you get Bergheim as result.

I know the problem with Austrian postal codes and do a search in 2 steps, first a search for the nearest postal code and 2nd I search for the postal code. So at the end I get a wrong result.

Again the problem is probably the river. Rivers are often borders. Maybe this can be used somehow, when calculating a position.

Nearest postal code and country

For 48.156670 12.829440 I got a postal code from Austria, while the place is in Germany.

It should be possible, that the 1st search is, to which country the position belongs and then the next postal code should be within this country.

In this case the river is the border between Austria and Germany.

Aw:cityname of postal code of a position is too exact

I agree that this is a very good idea. I think you will always find results in the whole world, where some place doesn't fit.

As already asked, how can I get this result with _1_ query from a position? Do I have to write an own script?

Within in the town of Salzburg, I get different results from time to time. This is not the topic of this thread, but there is a connection and it helps me to explain where I see problems and what could be a workaround.

E.g. http://www.geonames.org/maps/showOnMap?q=47.79778%2013.04639 is the salzburg cathedral

About 2 weeks ago I got as name "Nonntal", a part of Salzburg, which is wrong, but Nonntal is very near to the cathedral. I don't know exaxctly where the border is between Nonntal and Altstadt, but the cathedral belongs to Altstadt. But maybe there has been something changed in the last weeks.

When I query http://www.geonames.org/maps/showOnMap?q=47.8061%2013.04108 which is "Mirabellgarten", a famous garden in the town of Salzburg and do the following query:

http://ws.geonames.org/findNearbyPostalCodes?lat=47.8061&lng=13.04108

I get Mönchsberg as name, which is wrong for sure, Mönchsberg is a small hill or if you want mountain not far away. I think the correct name for Mirabellgarten should be "Andräviertel", but this is a lot complex and I wonder how this can be caculated.

Anyway, I think there always will be errors and normally you don't need the place so exact for a photo. I think it is ok, if you get the "main name" for the zip-code.

So I would be happy to have an option to get the most used name for the zip-code as result, when I query a position.

Since I use the results with my script, I would also be happy, if the result is not a detailed website, but a simple text or maybe a xml-file.

cityname of postal code of a position is too exact

This is a follow up of my posting at http://forum.geonames.org/gforum/posts/list/454.page

When I query http://ws.geonames.org/findNearbyPostalCodes?lat=47.774321600&lng=13.060253300 I get the postalcode 5020 and as name Morzg, which is in theory correct, but doesn't fit my needs to get as name Morzg, I would like to have Salzburg as a result.

If i do a query with the postalcode, which I got as result:
http://www.geonames.org/postalcode-search.html?q=5020&country=AT I am coming closer to my needs.

The first place is the result, which I would like to get, when I query the position, namely Salzburg.

How can I get this result, when I query the position 47.774321600&lng,13.060253300?

I am online again, and do some tests with the zip-code, eg:

http://ws.geonames.org/findNearbyPostalCodes?lat=47.774321600&lng=13.060253300

<postalcode>5020</postalcode>

<countryCode>AT</countryCode>
<lat>47.7666667</lat>
<lng>13.0666667</lng>
<adminCode1>SA</adminCode1>
<adminName1>Salzburg</adminName1>
<adminCode2>501</adminCode2>
<adminName2>Salzburg(Stadt)</adminName2>
<adminCode3>50101</adminCode3>
<adminName3>Salzburg</adminName3>
<distance>0.9768088216762807</distance>

This is correct, but I don't like the result "Morzg". I would like to have the "standard result" of the zip code 5020 which is the town of Salzburg. How can I query the zip code for 5020 in my example to get as result Salzburg or Salzburg(Stadt)? Maybe this fits my needs, when I do a double query. I mean first I query the zip-code and then I query the city name. For those who don't know Morzg is a part of the city of Salzburg. When I remember other queries, I think it is not so easy to use the adminName2 by default to get the desired result.

Thanks Marc, I think "findNearbyPostalCodes" could fit my needs.

At the moment I have limited internet-access, so I cannot do not a lot of tests. In about 2-3 weeks I hope to do some tests again. And yes, I am sure the same query lead to different results and that I found very strange too. There could be a connection between a timeout of the query. I mean the first query had no result, and a 2nd query immediately after, lead to another geoname.

Aw:same position 2 countries, 3 places

Of course it makes sense to get places from another country, if you query _more_ than 1 position, but not with only 1 and then randomly right or wrong. I accept, that it is sometimes not easy to define the right place, but I don't understand the different results. I would understand if it is everytime worng.

Here is an example how I do the query:
curl -s http://ws.geonames.org/findNearbyPlaceName?lat=47.68639&lng=12.57111&radius=10&style=FULL

In this case I don't see no population via web too.

Can you give me an idea, in this case, how I can define automatically "Reit im Winkl" or "Ruhpolding", which is a little bit larger than Grabenkohlstatt, which is my first result.

I analyze the result with a bash-script by grep, sed, a.s.o and need criteria to define a place which is not the nearest one, but more known.

With my query I always get _very_ little villages which don't make a lot sense to me. I thought about the population as criteria, but any other idea is welcome.

I will try to find an example where I see a population via the web and not with curl.

I queried e.g. 47.68639 12.57111 about 30 times and got sometimes really wrong things, like Bavaria and Tirol at the same time. Bavaria is a state of Germany and Tirol is a state of Austria, for those who don't know. I understand that there are errors in the database, but how could the same position lead to different results?

I noticed similar things with nearly half of my positions. The place is not totally wrong most times, but also not correct. Often it is the next "district" and not the one, which was queried. If you would like to have examples please let me know.

Is it possible to to restrict the result to the number of the population? If, please let me know which syntax should be used with curl. The strange thing is, when I query with curl, I get data, but I can't see the population which I can see with firefox.
