				<title>Re:Request for Postal Codes Dump</title>
				<description><![CDATA[ [Hopefully this doesn't get flagged as spam because of the many hyperlinks. I assure you this is not spam.]

Hello, may I also receive the zip code database dump? Would you also please let me know (or point me to) the use/redistribution terms for this, if it's not CC-BY like the rest of geonames? I'd like to host and distribute it (or any redistributable subset) from infochimps.org if that's allowed.

Do you know the basic provenance of your US zip codes? The data source page cites the Census department, and I'm interested if they are based off of the 1999 US Census dump, the ZCTAs, or another resource.

Finally, for anyone interested, a recent post to the get.theinfo.org mailing list yielded the following additional ZIP/Postal code resources:

* US Zip codes from Census Bureau -- ZCTAs (not ZIPs): http://www.census.gov/geo/www/cob/bdy_files.html (explanation of ZCTA: http://www.census.gov/geo/ZCTA/zcta.html )
* 1999 data; pre-ZCTA:  http://www.census.gov/geo/www/tiger/zip1999.html
* Mixed commercial/free Terms of Service attached: http://www.maxmind.com/app/postalcode
* UK-only, crowdsourced:  http://www.freethepostcode.org/ and  http://www.npemap.org.uk/
* 404'd: http://civicspacelabs.org/zipcodedb
* lots here, but poor US coverage: http://www.eventme.com/pc/PostalCodeHelp.aspx
* US & Canada (provenance? recency?):  http://www.populardata.com/downloads.html
* http://benfry.com/zipdecode/
* ... or email Aaron Swartz for (probably best) US ZIP data

... other Address Geocoding resources:
* Geocoding API: http://geocoder.us/
* Scrapeable?:   http://www.getlatlon.com
* geocoding resources: http://exogen.case.edu/projects/geopy/
* IP-Address to Geolocation or ASN: http://www.maxmind.com/app/geolitecountry and sequelae. (mixed commercial / open licenses apply)
