I am currently working on a direct link from geonames data to shapefiles (mainly gadm, unless I find something better).

In some cases (e.g., Mertert and Wormeldange in Luxembourg), the lat/long for the admin3 entries lie outside of the gadm shapes, but are just inside when plotted on a Google map, due to the fact that the centre of the Mosel is the border.

So far, I have (PostGIS) been using ST_PointOnSurface to ensure that any points calculated from a polygon are on the shape (basically centred, but adjusted to be on the surface of the polygon).

How have the co-ordinates for admin areas been established? I am quite happy to ensure that the offending items are modified if that is OK with the community.

Regards,
Robert

Hi Robert

Thanks for your contribution. Please feel free to improve the coordinates, just be carefull not to use anything derived from GADM since the restrictive licence of GADM does not allow us to use their data.

Regards

Marc
