Hi,

I have such a lat long

Longitude=-123.3984375000
Latitude=28.9216308594

findnearby does not give anything for these coordinates
http://ws.geonames.org/findNearby?lat=28.9216308594&lng=-123.3984375000

When I do a reverse geocode here
http://www.travelgis.com/geocode/Default.aspx

It gives
Pacific Ocean (ocean): 20.4105569665534, -163.196482895918; World: 24.9853374179052, -40.0293242535731;

Which seems like a hierarchy query.

How can I extract similar data for such a lat long from geonames?

Hi Giorgio

There is a hierarchy service, though it does not include oceans.

I have not yet found free polygons with ocean boundaries. Do you know of one?

Hi Marc,

I just found the Digital Chart of the World which seems to be a a government stuff and it seems to have oceans.

Are you familiar with it?

http://www.maproom.psu.edu/dcw/dcw_about.shtml#POLDESC

It might be a great addition to geonames. It seems to have several versions, and the arcinfo version is not public domain though.

Cheers,
G
