The current release of geonames-0.2.jar requires 1.5 and therefore cannot be used with 1.4. Is there any .jar that can be used with 1.4?

I am afraid this is the only jar available. You could use the source code and get rid of Generics and Enumerations.
I have just put version 0.3 online.
