Extract "geonames" from text  XML

There is text (examples: "Welcome to Berlin!", "Moscow is the capital of Russia")

Is there possible (and how?) to extract "geonames" from this text?

text1:["Berlin"], text2:["Moscow", "Russia"]

may be 3rd party solutions?

Otherwise grow your own. Can get a fairly basic, but working, implementation, by loading geonames placenames into a full-text search index (eg sphinxsearch.com). And querying against it.
