I have the commercial web services and experienced an outage today at around 10:30 GMT until 10:50 GMT. The commerical backup Url also seemed to have troubles too.

Works correctly again now though - any ideas what happened?

Is there any other solution and not using the web-service directly?

There was a serious problem with the power supply in the datacenters. The commercial services and the website were affected for around 20 minutes.
The free services had troubles for a couple of hours.

We are using the free service. Which url we should use?

earlier it was ws.geonames.org, after that we have changed to ws5.geonames.org

ws.geonames.org is the standard domain, but ws5 is still alive and in fact the same server.
