Hallo akin

Die Frage ist nicht deplatziert. Nur bin ich nicht sicher ob ich sie richtig verstanden habe. Möchtest du ein 'suggest' Feature in deine Seite einbauen? Das heisst jemand gibt die ersten Buchstaben ein und erhält eine Auswahl von Möglichkeiten, die mit diesen Buchstaben beginnen?
Dafür stehen die 'starts_with' Parameter zur Verfügung.

I assume country,state and address are coming from a database.

Best will be to add two new columns to the database for latitude and longitude and have a geocoding job find the lat/lng during creation (or update) of a profile.

this is true this kind of bootstraping update has to be done directly on the database.

I did it for Georgia right now.

There are still some data inconsistencies in this file. See this thread for details : http://forum.geonames.org/gforum/posts/list/208.page#1143
The duplicates have been removed from the dump, but the problem, that some admin1 features are in the '00' region, still exists with some '00' adminCodes.
Your help in fixing these errors would be welcome.

As soon as these errors are fixed we will replace the admin1Codes.txt with what is now the admin1CodesASCII.txt.

Hi

There is a rather new flag on the web interface called 'isOfficialName' :

The flag has not yet been exported, but it will be exported starting from tomorrow.

Vielleicht möchtest Du besser den findNearbyPostalCodes verwenden. Für viele Länder hat er mehr Daten.
Der findNearbyPlaceName deckt zwar viel mehr Länder ab, hat dafür aber weniger Hierarchieinfos. Der AdminCode3 ist nur für den Kanton Zürich vorhanden und deshalb noch nicht im Webservice. Könnte aber leicht eingebaut werden, wenn du daran interessiert bist.

look for AR.21 for Santa Fe.

America/Argentina/Buenos_Aires is the timezone and not the province.

The province is in the column 'adminCode1'. The column contains the fips code for the province. The fips code for Santa Fe is 21 :

We are calculating a 'quality' score based on :
- what is the source? (anonymous user or trusted user)
- do we have an address
- do we have a postal code, is the format of the postal code correct for the country
- do we have a place name
- Is the name mixed case or all capitals (mixed case scores higher)
- do we have images, how many images
- do we have a description

and so on

The automatic country/admin reverse geocoder can be wrong at the borders. It can manually be changed by clicking on 'edit' and then on the country name. I have corrected it for Svinesund.

The error preventing you from correcting Oviedo was caused by a bug introduced this afternoon. I am sorry about this. The bug should be fixed by now.

I have deleted Bujumbura. The restriction with deleting is for certain kind of places and for 'new' users.

You raise an interesting question. We are working on including hotels and other points of interests like restaurants, museums, theaters, ... in the geonames database.

Do you have an idea how this 'priority vs other users' would look like? What we plan is to use a ranking considering the quality of the data we have for a feature.

In der Schweiz findet zur Zeit die Anhörung zum neuen Geoinformationsgesetz (GeoIG) statt. [1] Die Frist für Eingaben dauert bis zum 26 Feb 2007. Das GeoIG kann als Scheizerische Version der europäischen INSPIRE Initiative betrachtet werden.

Ralph Nusser und ich haben im Namen von Geonames eine Eingabe zur Anhörung vorbereitet. (Eingabe als pdf) Wir möchten in erster Linie, dass der 'public domain' Gedanke stärker zum Tragen kommt und die wichtigsten Geobasisdaten als public domain im GeoIG festgeschrieben werden.
Dies vornehmlich aus zwei Gründen
1. Effizienz : Zahlreiche Studien zeigen, dass es für die wirtschaftliche Entwicklung eines Landes vorteilhaft ist, wenn der Zugang zu Informationen der öffentlichen Hand frei ist.
2. der Steuerzahler ist der eigentliche Eigentümer und sollte auch Zugang zu seinen Daten haben.

Zu besonderer Heiterkeit Anlass gegeben hat bei mir die folgende Passage "wenn ein Grossverteiler basierend auf Landeskarten von swisstopo Karten zum Auffinden der Filialen durch die eigenen Chauffeure erstellt, dann gilt dies als Eigengebrauch dieses Grossverteilers." und "Eine private Homepage, welche frei im Internet zugänglich ist und Geobasisdaten des Bundesrechts enthält, gilt nicht als Eigengebrauch." [2] Das läuft doch letzendlich darauf hinaus, dass Grosskonzerne die Geodaten kostenlos verwenden dürfen während ein Schüler für die Verwendung von Geobasisdaten auf seiner Homepage bezahlen soll.

The 404 error helped. I have changed the server to return a 200 status ok in this case. Can you test it?

There are two slightly different countryInfo services. Which one would you like to have in JSON format? At the moment none of them is available in JSON.

Yes, it is available. You can store the countryInfo output of the service for the language independent data and use the country names in all languages from the daily dump.

Most data fields in the countryInfo apply to countries only and the search service returns all kind of toponyms.

I have just updated the "Isle of Man" codes with the newest data from http://www.npemap.org.uk/ Guernsey and Jersey are already on the islands as far as I can see. The Isle of Man should be correct now.

I don't know much about Northern Ireland. There are about 280 codes in the newest npe dump not yet included in the geonames database. There is some information about Scotland and Northern Ireland on the npe website :

Do you think it would be useful to include the full npe dump in the geonames database?
The problem is that there are no place names in the npe dump and I don't have time to find the missing place names. We can add the outward and inward postal codes from npe and freethepostcode.org in the geonames database and webservices without place names. Or someone volunteers to find the place names for the 280 missing outward locations. What do you think?

Hi Dan

I wasn't an encoding problem. It was a problem on the server side. Instead of searching for a place called "Pleasant Valley" it was searching for a place with the two names "Pleasant" and "Valley". A place with these two names does not exist and the search didn't find anything.
