Sami, Isa and everybody else

You could help us make it even better with asking data provider for address data like filling stations, banks, large supermarket chains for their geocoded data. Some of them might see that it is not much work for them to send us and excel spread sheet and it certainly has value to them to be found by a huge number of applications.

Cheers

Hi Sami

I have fixed most problems. Thanks.

The Karotegin Province does exist :
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Region_of_Republican_Subordination
Though it does not seem to have a fips code. We could use the ISO code KR instead.

There is another issue not yet fixed. The ascii names for Chinese or other exotic scipts. The ascii field is automatically generated with a romanization algorithm. But this does not work for Chinese. Should we use null or empty values there?

Marc
Hi Ivan

You can use the search service to return all cities for a country :
http://www.geonames.org/export/geonames-search.html
Just search for the fClass 'P', use the parameter country and use the country code or name as the search parameter q.

The service to return districts (pplx) for a city does not yet exists but we are working on it. The service for streets is not planned.

Marc
Hi Julian

Thanks. I am fixing it.

Hi Ivan

Barry Hunter has a list of GeoNames web services :
http://www.nearby.org.uk/geonames-webservices.php?sort=Input

The children and hierarchy services are new and not yet on the documentation. The term 'beta' has lost its meaning with the craze for perpetual beta. But this is what it would have been called some years ago. Now it is just missing in the documentation page

Would you mind to elaborate on the service you are missing? I am not sure whether I understand it fully.

Hi Carey

For some countries like France, Spain, Italy and Bulgaria we have already populated the alternate names with the data from the postal code database. Other countries will follow. Which country would you like to add data for?

Cheers

Marc
Hi Max

Thanks.

We don't have a Logo. Any logo-designer is welcome to help out with one.

We are trying to integrate the 'normal' place database with the postal codes. So you can add the postal code as alternate name in the pseudo language 'post'. 'Bonladen' is not only missing in the postal codes database it is also missing in the main GeoNames database. You can add it over the google maps edit interface. There is a short description on how to add places in the GeoNames user manual : http://www.geonames.org/manual.html

Marc
The reverse geocoding is a simple call to the database, how the call looks like depends on the database you are using. You have to check the documentation.
Hi

We have not yet fully mapped the postal codes to geonameIds, but we are working on it.

Marc
Hi Lysoff

I have added the geonameId to the countryInfo XML response. Hope this helps.

Cheers

We have started to add postal codes as alternate names with the pseudo iso language code 'post'. This makes sense if section of populated places have other names and other postal codes.
Otherwise you can send me an excel or other file and I directly update the database with it. A wiki-entry form is not yet implemented for the postal codes tables.

The lat/lng are empty if we haven't found a place with the same name in the main database in the correct neighbourhood and if we don't have enough information for an estimation.

Did you checkout the google maps geocoder?

I checked what kind of places have the 'Locale' type in the USGS data set and found that we cannot use the PPL feature code for many records.

I have updated today those with 'Shopping Center' in the name to S.MALL (circa 11.000 records) and those with 'Golf Course' (2865 records) in the name to S.RECG.

There are still a lot of other feature codes hidden in 'Locale' type, many of which could possibly be identified with the name.

Marc
For the type 'locale' we are using :

S.MALL if 'Shopping Center' is part of the name.
S.RECG if 'Golf Course' is part of the name.
Hallo Torsten

http://forum.geonames.org/gforum/posts/list/415.page#2055

Für München gibt es diese PPLX :
Berg am Laim
Bogenhausen
Daglfing
Forstenried
Gern
Giesing
Großhadern
Harlaching
Hartmannshofen
Johanneskirchen
Kolonie Lerchenau
Milbertshofen
Mittersendling
Moosach
Neuhausen
Oberföhring
Obermenzing
Obersendling
Prinz Ludwigshöhe
Ramersdorf
Schwabing
Straßtrudering
Thalkirchen
Zamdorf

Marc
Hi

You can use the findNearbyPostalCodes instead : http://ws.geonames.org/findNearbyPostalCodes?lat=47.68639&lng=12.57111

Or you can only look at places with a population and discard the places without population data.

I don't understand why the service should return different results for the same query. Are you sure the problem is not somewhere else? Do you remember which query caused the problem?

Marc
Hi Pascal

Thanks for your updates. I have updated the database.
There is also a wiki-edit form on our website for updates, most updates except setting admincodes for admin regions can be done directly with your browser. The admin codes for an admin region is a bootstrapping thing and needs to be done directly on the database.

Dieses Attribut ist beim JSON tatsächlich vergessen worden. Danke für den Hinweis. Das Attribut ist ab sofort vorhanden.
