Das File im cvs hat jetzt auch eine richtige regular expression und auch das Format für die PLZ-Formate wurde geändert.
Die Informationen wurden von vanillabean beigesteuert.

Gruss

Hi Starburger

I am afraid this is not yet possible. We lack the information on which island a place is located. We would need island shape files to be able to update our database with this information.

Cheers

Marc
Thanks, Dominic. I have added the missing elevation to these mountains.

Marc
Thanks. I am sorry, there was something really wrong.

Marc
The reason for having two files is a historical one and sooner or later they will be reconciled into one file.
The admin1Codes was first with only the fips codes, then some users were asking for geonameid and ascii names of the administrative divisions. This information is in the admin1CodesASCII file, which is generated from the geonames database.

Marc
I will add it for you.

Marc
Hallo Schufi

Gruss

Marc
The exact location is the lat/lng.
What else than nearby places can you possibly expect?
Getting the place name or address for a lat/lng is called 'reverse geocoding'. GeoNames is having a couple of services for this :
http://www.geonames.org/export/reverse-geocoding.html

Marc
In the FIPS Bulletin 10 (23 March 2006) they write :

ICELAND (FNC 340)
Delete all entries and replace with:
region
IC38 Austurland
IC39 Höfuðborgarsvæði
IC40 Norðurland Eystra
IC41 Norðurland Vestra
IC42 Suðurland
IC43 Suðurnes
IC44 Vestfirðir
IC45 Vesturland

All codes from 1 to 37 are obsolete, but we don't know how they relate to the new codes. Does anybody know the names of the former fips regions 1 to 6?

Marc
Hi Julian

The wrong entries have been removed from the file.

We are still using the fips codes for the administrative divisions :
http://www.geonames.org/IS/administrative-division-iceland.html
The Fips codes go from 38 to 45, whereas the ISO codes go from 1 to 8.

Hi tk147

For Canada we have the province level information (British Columbia) in column 'admin1code'. The information for lower levels is not yet included in the database.

eyeRmonkey :

I have updated the feature code for Puerto Rico to 'dependent political entity' it will soon show as second result item.

The information is not yet as complete for low level information like suburbs and neighbourhoods. See also this discussion about New York :

Marc
Hi Karim

This would be a fantastic contribution, assuming we are allowed to use the files. Do you know the source and licence of the files?
You can send the polygon files to marc@geonames.org or you can attach them to the forum thread.
I will then update the administrative divisions and also update the web service 'country subdivision' : http://www.geonames.org/export/#countrysubdiv

Cheers

Marc
Hallo Schufi

Wie untersuchst du den Header? Ich habe eine handvoll Tools versucht und die zeigen alle ISO8859-1 an. (wget -S, web-sniffer.net, http://www.rexswain.com/httpview.html)

Marc
Hi Phil

We don't have exact boundaries for populated places. You have to use the other reverse geocoding services like nearbyPlace for this.

Marc
Thanks Mike. They have been missing population and where therefore missing in your first file.

Marc
I have deleted the duplicate entries. For 'Staten Island' we even had a third entry with the same coordinates and the feature code 'Island'.

Marc
Hi

For the search we use the number of hits the Yahoo search returns for a postal code place name combination. Details in this blog posting :
http://geonames.wordpress.com/2006/04/30/postalcode-search-improvements/

We could expose this 'relevance' measurement in the webservice, though I am a bit reluctant since it is not perfect and just a simple heuristic. I fear we will have complaints about this 'relevance' measure if we expose it somewhere.

Marc
Hi Sami

This was still on my todo list following this thread : http://forum.geonames.org/gforum/posts/list/465.page#2244

The problem is I could not yet find the best code for it. From the ISO document :

The deletion of the region Karategin leaves one part of the country, including the capital Dushanbe and a number of rayons, without a name and without code in ISO 3166-2. The ISO 3166/MA will contact the authorities in Tajikistan to find a solution for this blank.

http://www.iso.org/iso/en/prods-services/iso3166ma/03updates-on-iso-3166/nli-4.pdf

I have now set it to 'RR' as you suggest and I will put a link from the info window to this thread.
