General -> Missing ADM1 Codes in TJ -> Go to message
Hi,

In ADM1Ascii, there is a broken line :
TJ. Region of Republican Subordination Region of Republican Subordination 6452614

which should be corrected to :
TJ.RR Region of Republican Subordination Region of Republican Subordination 6452614

(http://www.statoids.com/utj.html , or http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Region_of_Republican_Subordination)

Additionally, something like the following line can be added in ADM1 File :
TJ.RR Region of Republican Subordination

- Concerning the KR region : I think the ISO code is fine. (will you also add it to the adm1 file ? or just add it to the adm1ascii file)
- Concerning the ASCII equivalent : a null value is fine. I don't think people should use this field anyways. (lucene) text analyzers & stemmers are a better way to prepare the data for full text search.

I do think addresses and other POIs such as filling stations, supermarkets, etc are interesting to have in the daily dump.

a few countries did not have any currency :

Bouvet Island (Bouvetoya)

Heard and McDonald Islands
British Indian Ocean Territory (Chagos Archipelago)

I have updated the countries file to include the countries of these countries (except antarctica, that doesn't seem to have any)

Actually, I tried feeding all the missing names to postgres, and took the minimum levensthein distance between the missing name and all ADM1s of the given country.. The result is really bad, and completly unusable...

Maybe you have a better heuristic ?

I realize I can go to an individual country, like Canada, http://www.geonames.org/CA/administrative-division-canada.html
and get this data for one country. I was just looking for finding this data all in one location.

OK, so I used a simple script to retrive the list of missing ADM codes that are missing from admin1Ascii :

Which outputs 995 results.

So, what would be needed now would be something that, for each of this codes, gets the name of the adm in admin1codes.txt, does a adm search on the features, and gets the geonamesId out of that.

Do you currently have something similar we can tweak ? If not, I can work out some script that would do the job.

What is the difference between the 2 ADM1 files (Admin1Codes and Admin1CodesASCII) ?

It looks like the ASCII version contains more information (geonames ID for instance), but I am not sure whether it contains all ADM1 that are in the other file..

Also, it seems to be broken in some places :
GB. GB. Argyll and Bute 6457407

whereas the admin1Codes file is fine.

Is it possible for me to correct the ADM1 Code in the UI ? Will it affect the ascii file or the other ?

Here is a correction in the ADM2 List :
the adm1 code is missing in :
CZ..0100 Okres Praha Okres Praha 6533385

which should be corrected (I think) into :
CZ.52.0100 Okres Praha Okres Praha 6533385

(I think Okres means something like a district in czech, and according to what I understand from these pages, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Districts_of_the_Czech_Republic, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Regions_of_the_Czech_Republic, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Praha, http://www.aneris.cz/praha_05.html ), Okres Praha seems to be the district of Praha, which is the district of Prague, and the only district I could find in your adm1 list with praha inside is CZ.52, Praha, Hlavní Město, so I guess it is the right one... (the last link I gave writes PRAHA - hlavní město České republiky )

When wikipedia doesn't give any symbol, I just use the currency code itself.

Thanks for the information ! I was thinking of doing something similar, except that I'm not confident in the "largest population" trick..

Consider the case of some small city that is divided into sections, and that is near a larger city. (I think PPLX can apply to small cities, it is not necessarily an Arrondissement of Paris, it can be whatever part of any town). So, in that case, if you try to match the PPLX to this small city, it is going to find Paris, which is not what we want....

Another question.. What do you consider as a "city" ? My definition of a city is PPL, PPLA, PPLC, PPLG, PPPL, PPLR, PPLS, STLMT, out of which I remove all features that contain the word "(historical)". What is your opinion about that ?

Hi,

It looks like the zip codes are sometimes associated to Cities (PPL, PPLC, ..), and sometimes to sections of cities (PPLX..), like #6459135.

So, I'm wondering whether it is possible to find the city that a PPLX refers to.

Does anyone have an idea ?
