I have seen that some user editions have handmade comments instead of the automatic ones.

Is there a way to leave a comment explaining changes from the Web interface?

Hi Jobrafo

At the moment user comments are only possible for "delete". Inserts, updates and alternatenames have automatically generated comments.

The automatic comments help spot and correct vandalism. It would, however, be possible to add a user comment to the automatically generated comment.

Would you like to have user comments for inserts and updates or for alternate names or both?

Ideally it would be a Talk: page as in Wikipedia. But comments on both would be useful for contrary editions.

An example would be the Parliament of Catalonia http://www.geonames.org/maps/geonameId=6252066
http://www.parlament-cat.net/portal/page?_pageid=34,34135&_dad=portal&_schema=PORTAL

It is not "HSEC country house a large house, mansion, or chateau, on a large estate". It is in a park, but was never a countryside residence.
However my change to "Building" was reverted. I'd like to explain why it should not be HSEC.

I don't want to reinvent the wheel. Do you think it is ok to use this forum for the discussion? I can setup a new category and for every toponym in dispute we open a new topic and a link on the google maps page will link to the topic?

So instead of a user comment we have a link to the topic in the forum?

What do you think?

It would work. Can topics live forever? So that if, after one year, you dispute a toponym, you can read the old discussion and add your thoughts.

Another feature from Wikipedia that I miss is watchlists.
This can lead to turfization, with people becoming emotionally attached to "my toponyms", but the alternative is that your laborious changes get reverted while you are not looking.

Discussions / Talks :
There is a new forum dedicated to discussions of toponyms :

http://forum.geonames.org/gforum/forums/show/8.page

Please discuss the "Parlament de Catalunya" in this thread :
http://forum.geonames.org/gforum/posts/list/99.page

For other toponyms just create a new topic and I will link the google maps view for the topic with the forum discussion. The database behind the forum is running on the geonames server. It means the discussion entries in the forum will live as long as geonames, even if we decide to use an other discussion software we are able to migrate the 'old' discussions.

TODO : The geonames main site and this forum need to have single sign on. For the time being two separate accounts (one for the forum and one for the geonames main site) are required.

Watchlist

I have set up a first version of a watchlist :

http://www.geonames.org/user/jobrafo/watchlist/

It displays the most recent updates of toponyms which the user has also updated.
Format of the URL : "www.geonames.org/user/" + username + "/watchlist/"

Would you also need email alerts, if one of 'your' toponyms gets changed?

As usual any comments are welcome.

Marc
