I am trying to find all cities/towns/villages and had applied filters on feature_class = 'P' and feature_code = 'PPL'. But I get to see lot of places within my city as places. Example : http://www.geonames.org/6618686/sangam-circle.html ( this is just a traffic signal but I see it as tagged as PPL. Same goes with all road names in Bangalore). I am not sure if this "issue" is localized to India specifically , but I would love to know what is the best way to get only cities/towns/villages for all countries ?

Although not fool proof try ADM1 for State/Provinces and ADM2 for Cities.

However for US ADM2 gives Counties.

PPL is correct, together with PPLA and PPLC.

This is a mainly a problem with a handful of entries in Bangalore. The entries with the wrong feature codes have all been created by the same user. He promised me to fix the problem, but it seems he has not yet done so.

Please feel free to correct the erroneous feature codes yourself.
