I was surprised to see that the population is missing for the US states Kentucky, Massachusetts, Pennsylvania, and Virginia. Perhaps by coincidence, these were the last four states returned by the query.
The query I used was:
http://ws.geonames.org/search?q=&country=US&featureCode=ADM1&style=LONG
And (cf other thread) the name of West Virginia is given as "State of West Virginia".

Hi Richard
Please feel free to add missing information like missing population data. There is a wiki-style edit interface to fix issues like these ones.
http://www.geonames.org/manual.html
I have added the missing population data for the US states and also set the flag 'isShortName' and 'isPreferredName' for the 'West Virginia'.
