first of all, thank you very much to the developers for the superb functionality and service you've done at / with geonames.
While exploring the possibilities of geonames i discovered Wikipedia Fulltext search.
When i'm using http://ws.geonames.org/wikipediaSearch?q=Roma&maxRows=10&lang=it geonames spits out some matching Wikipedia entries for the search term "Roma". Even thow it says that this search works only in german or english, it does work in italian and french as well.
I need for an upcoming project several hundred datasets like this for different cities in XML format. My problem is that a good amount of these results need to be in Espanol and some in Turkish language, neither of those works with this geonames service.
Is there any information on how could i perform this search directly at Wikipedias site? Is there any service to perform searches and get the result as a xml over at wikipedia?
Thank you Marc for clearing this. I was thinking already that geonames services does pull the data from a wikipedia dump.
Do you think it is possible somewhere near in the future to get corresponding wiki entries in espanol and turkish as well with the forementioned geonames service?
Spanish will certainly be supported with the next wikipedia load (I am in Spain at the moment). With Turkish I am not so sure. I don't speak Turkish and cannot read it.
Furthermore there not yet too many geo-coded articles in the Turkish wikipedia. (http://www.geonames.org/wikipedia/) When we have more articles we will certainly parse it and full text search it.
