I'm getting some results from the Postal Code webservice that don't appear to be encoding the "Place" in UTF-8 properly. I'm trying to determine whether I'm going crazy or whether there is an encoding issue with the data that I'm looking at.

I get the strange characters even using the html interface to the web service on the geonames site. I'm using Firefox to flip the display encoding around and I can't find any encoding that gives me a recognizable character.

Can someone give me a second opinion on whether this is me or the data in this situation:

Thanks,

Hi Marc

It is not your fault. There seems to be something wrong with French characters for Canada / Quebec.
I will take care of it and keep you updated. Thanks

Hi Marc

I have fixed a couple of encoding problems for Canadian place names in the postal code data set. I hope I have found all of them.
The fix is available in todays dump.

Cheers

Marc
