Hi,
I'm using the DB dumps (DE.txt, cities1000.txt, etc.) and would like to find all locations on an island, e.g. all locations on the island Sylt or the island Fehmarn.
I'm able to find the islands - but I cannot identify any reference to locations which reside on the islands.
Is there a way to do so?
Regards,
starburger

Hi Starburger
I am afraid this is not yet possible. We lack the information on which island a place is located. We would need island shape files to be able to update our database with this information.
Cheers
Marc

Hi Marc,
hmmm - I was afraid to get this answer
Nevertheless: Taking the example of Sylt or Fehmarn. Those islands might be some sort of administrative regions which comprise all their locations.
Is there a way to find out which ADMs they are and which locations belong to those ADMs? Or are these islands no ADMs?
Thanks for your help,
Starburger

Marc,
do you have another service for that problem in mind? Maybe a commercial one even?
I have seen some travel sites that have the hierarchy island -> locations.
Thanks for your ideas,
Starburger

We have not yet thought about integrating commercial data into geonames. Adding and integrating freely available data is keeping us very busy.

Apologies for resurrecting a 6 year old thread!
Is this possible nowadays? This would be a very useful feature for us.
Otherwise would linking them manually in this way be okay?

Thanks!

There is a new service 'contains' which does exactly this:
http://www.geonames.org/export/place-hierarchy.html#contains
the service is using polygon boundaries as displayed on the new GeoNames Map Interface:
http://www.geonames.org/2746385/texel.html
The service is new and depends on the existence of boundary polyon information. You will therefore have to check whether the boundary already exists for the features you are interested in.

Great, that looks very nice (and useful!)
Is there possibly a way that either these polygons or the bounding boxes can be downloaded/imported locally?

The bounding boxes are part of the premium data subscription:
http://www.geonames.org/products/premium-data.html
The polygons are not yet accessible. I guess it will an option to the premium data subscription requiring some additional payment.
