Hi Marc,
and there should be admin1 codes IS.01 .. IS.06 with real Icelandic meanings - e.g. Selfoss has cc=IS and admin1_code=03.
But if we need to fix Iceland maybe we should use the following (gleaned from Statoids.org)
IS.01 Höfuðborgarsvæðið (Capital)
IS.02 Suðurnes (Southern Peninsula)
IS.03 Vesturland (Westland)
IS.04 Vestfirðir (Western Fjords)
IS.05 Norðurland vestra (Northland West)
IS.06 Norðurland eystra (Northland East)
IS.07 Austurland (Eastland)
IS.08 Suðurland (Southland)

Hi Julian
The wrong entries have been removed from the file.
We are still using the fips codes for the administrative divisions :
http://www.geonames.org/IS/administrative-division-iceland.html
The Fips codes go from 38 to 45, whereas the ISO codes go from 1 to 8.
http://www.geonames.org/search.html?q=adm1&country=IS

But if I look at just the population centres, none of them have admin1_codes in the FIPS range:

In the FIPS Bulletin 10 (23 March 2006) they write :
ICELAND (FNC 340)
Delete all entries and replace with:
region
IC38 Austurland
IC39 Höfuðborgarsvæði
IC40 Norðurland Eystra
IC41 Norðurland Vestra
IC42 Suðurland
IC43 Suðurnes
IC44 Vestfirðir
IC45 Vesturland
All codes from 1 to 37 are obsolete, but we don't know how they relate to the new codes. Does anybody know the names of the former fips regions 1 to 6?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Regions_of_Iceland looks like a good reference.

There is a farm in Iceland miss-spelled: 3415656
is spelled now as Jarðlaugstaðir, should be Jarðlangstaðir
It completely changes the meaning of the name so that U instead of N makes a huge difference. Can we fix?

Julian, these are regions, however a lot of changes have been made to the county names due to mergers. ie. Borgarfjarðarsýsla is now Borgarbyggð and includes many other regions.
For elections, another type of regions are used however. (after looking at the wikipedia map). This is a up-to-date map of the names as they are today and their geographic locations

Hi Agust
Thanks. I have changed the spelling of Jarðlangstaðir:
http://www.geonames.org/3415656/jardlangstadir.html
Any body can help fix errors:
http://www.geonames.org/manual.html
I tried to find information about the administrative division on the web page of the National Land Survey of Iceland ( http://www.lmi.is/ ). Unfortunatly it is in Icelandic and googletranslate is not very good with this language.
Do you find data (polygon boundaries / shape files) for the administrative divisions for download?
Best
Marc

I sent Landmælingar (ILM.is) an email and will follow up with a call to them on Monday. Seams like the list in the old post is a very limited and wrongly spelled list. I will do my best.
