I am considering using the alternate names file instead of the alternate names field in the geonames country files.

For names that do not have a language encoded in the islanguage field, what language is assumed?

Hi Carey

Alternate names without language are often international (English). Unfortunately you cannot bet on it and it might also be caused by a simple lack of data.
