Thanks for the great service. GeoNames is solving several problems for me, and I really like the fuzzy logic feature.

Question: What would be the recommended web service method for obtaining the hierarchy of administrative divisions that contain an arbitrary latitude and longitude?

The ws.geonames.org/hierarchy? service does exactly what I want, but it requires knowing a geonameId. I've tried getting one for something nearby using ws.geonames.org/findNearbyPlaceName? but my results are inconsistent. A "nearby place" might not be in the same jurisdiction, either. The same problem arises in trying to identify the appropriate postal code.

For US addresses the finest granularity is with the find nearest address service :
http://www.geonames.org/maps/reverse-geocoder.html
It returns the hierarchy as attributes.

Global coverage (except for holes in GB) has the country subdivision dervice :
http://www.geonames.org/export/#countrysubdiv
though only for the first administrative division.
