Denmark has the following administrative divisions :

ADM1 : Regions (5)
ADM2 : Municipalities (98 )

Denmark has been reorganized in January 2007. 271 municipalities were replaced by 98 larger municipalities, the 13 counties with 5 regions.

Thanks to Erik Bolstad.

Am I correct that in the geonames dump still the old regions are used for the admin1 column?

Hi Yves

This is exact. Most toponyms still refer to the old counties. Do you know how they counties merge into the regions? Is there a hard and fast rule? If yes we could easily update our database.

Hi Marc and Yves,

The counties have expired and does not exist anymore, so they could easily be deleted.

I have just found this excellent piece of work you have done. Thanks a lot. I want to help update the database and have created an user account (perels) for updating.

One thing that could be easier, is if you include a small edit link column in the search results, so that you don't have to click first on city name in the search results, then wait for page load, then click "P", and then on edit... this will save a lot of time.

Btw, I am working on a file with admin2 mappings for all Danish cities. I have updated a few manually.

Perhaps I should make myself a little more clear:

In http://download.geonames.org/export/dump/admin1Codes.txt we have
DK.01 - DK.16 - these should be deleted.

The following should be kept:

DK.17 Capital Region
DK.18 Central Jutland
DK.19 North Jutland
DK.20 Region Zealand
DK.21 South Denmark

The danish names are (I should have updated this in the database, but sometimes it complains about user level is only 1, instead of 2).

DK.17 Hovedstaden
DK.18 Midtjylland
DK.19 Nordjylland
DK.20 Sjælland
DK.21 Syddanmark

Hi Perels

I have increased your userlevel.
When you click on the 'P' on the search result page you get directly to the toponym detail information.

Do you happen to have the geonameid for the admin divisions? It would make the update easier for me.

I have just copied the elements from admin2.txt file now into the excel... see this file...

btw, the names I have provided are "more correct" than the current ones in the database.

2 more cents

All the 98 municipalities have 98 corresponding cities for which you could update their admin2 values.

E.g. if you have Municipality called "Assens Kommune", you can remove "Kommune" from this name, and update the city called "Assens" (currently this one: http://www.geonames.org/2624502/assens.html).
If you do it, please select the city that is closest to the GPS coordinates of the Municipality, since we also have several cities in Denmark that have same names.

I have updated the population.
I don't understand your last point. What do you want me to do with the city names?

Hi Marc,

OK I'll try to explain better.

This list here contains all the adm2's/municipalites of Denmark.
http://www.geonames.org/search.html?q=adm2+&country=DK

Now, all the adm2's of Denmark end suffixed by "Kommune". "Kommune" means municipality. All municipalities has a corresponding "main" city.
E.g.
"Assens Kommune" (http://www.geonames.org/2624500/assens-kommune.html)
has corresponding city of "Assens" (http://www.geonames.org/2624502/assens.html)

"Viborg Kommune" (http://www.geonames.org/2610315/viborg-kommune.html)
has a corresponding city of "Viborg" (http://www.geonames.org/2610319/viborg.html)

and so on...

So you can easily associate admin2 to 98 cities, because of the above rule.
Manually you could do it by first finding the city, then edit it and associate the adm2 to it... but you could easily do this with an sql update statement.
City names should be left untouched, sorry about bad explanation

Hi everybody,

The errors described on this forum post, has found its way back to the geonames.org database. Denmark still only has 98 municipalites and 5 regions - but now all the old and obsolete regions are back....

Could somebody delete these entries?

Also:
http://download.geonames.org/export/dump/admin1Codes.txt

DK.01 Århus
DK.02 Bornholm
DK.03 Frederiksborg
DK.04 Fyn
DK.05 Copenhagen city
DK.06 København
DK.07 Nordjylland
DK.08 Ribe
DK.09 Ringkøbing
DK.10 Roskilde
DK.11 Sønderjylland
DK.12 Storstrøm
DK.13 Vejle
DK.14 Vestsjælland
DK.15 Viborg
DK.16 Fredriksberg

Should be deleted as well. We don't have these regions anymore.
We only have

DK.17 Capital Region
DK.18 Central Jutland
DK.19 North Jutland
DK.20 Region Zealand
DK.21 Region South Denmark

The file admin1Codes.txt includes obsolete codes. If you only need the current codes you should use the file admin1CodesASCII.txt or the database itself.
