Hey All,

First of all, I would just like to say what a fantastic service this is! It's truly fantastic to see geodata being freed from corporations and released into the open-source, public domain like this!

I'm just doing some webdev with the Geonames API, and have hit a bit of a brick wall.

While I can sucessfully geocode places in countries like the UK, the USA, France etc., I seem unable to geocode places in countries like Egypt or Brazil, even though the places do exist in your database (I checked using the thing on the landing page for geonames.org).

For example, I can't fathom why http://ws.geonames.org/postalCodeSearch?placename=Taba&country=EG won't return any results.

Any suggestions? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Many Thanks,
Oliver

P.S. If it's just me being stupid, please don't hesitate to tell me![b]

Hi Oliver

We don't have postal codes for all countries. For global search you should use the search service as documented here :
http://www.geonames.org/export/geonames-search.html

Your lookup for Egypt looks like this :
http://ws.geonames.org/search?name=Taba&country=EG

Cheers

Marc

Marc,

Thanks so much for your quick response -- thanks for pointing that out… I was just looking at the immediate methods I saw on the webservice page.

Thanks for your help!
