I wish I would have found this sooner!

I am excited to see how the mailing list goes as well.

Couple quick questions if I may, I do not see the answer in here or on the site...

What is the policy on the usage amounts of your web services?
I am importing the data into a database, and will hopefully not require your bandwidth.

Do you know if anyone is working on/with a Perl API?
( It appeared this is in Java by the source code information )

Thanks!

Hi

There is a perl module here :
http://search.cpan.org/~perhenrik/Geo-GeoNames-0.03/

There aren't any restrictions on web service usage so far, but one day we might be forced to add some restrictions to the free services. In the mean time there is a donation link here : http://www.geonames.org/donations.html

Cheers

Marc

I saw that, I felt it was a little incomplete at this point, relative to the Geo::Coder::US module, although combining the 2 isnt much of a stretch i think, your data is relatively manage-able, although I have only reached the tip of the iceberg!

Naturally I stumble upon this and then work gets busy

Many thanks for supplying this service!

I plan on using it for my own web site, so naturally I hope that the service will continue be available in the future

Also, if it turns out that my site can make a few bucks from Google Ads, I'll be glad to go to your donation site, but ping me later.

In the mean time, is there anything you can clarify about your policy regarding if you ever decide to take the service down or otherwise stop providing it?

Thanks
Randy

Hi Randy

It is possible we might have to use some sort of daily limit per ipaddress to our free webservices. This depends on the number of requests we have to serve and on the donations made. Our resources to provide a free service are not unlimited.
For users who depend on our service for a mission critical application and who want a formal agreement with us we already have a second server available.
