While using geonames for a website, I noticed some inconsistency with the languages of some admin1/2 and city names of Italy.

If you look at the largest cities here http://www.geonames.org/IT/largest-cities-in-italy.html you will see that some cities are written in italian (local language) like Roma, Milano, ... While Turin is written in english, in italian it is Torino.

The same thing for first administrative division: italian and english are mixed. For example tuscany (in italian it is Toscana) and regione liguria, which is italian. In addition, here in italy we don't say "regione liguria" but just "liguria", the same way we say "toscana" and not "regione toscana)

Why is the database this way?
I think they all should be in italian, right?

Thanks. The largest city page is in English and the names should consequently also be in English.
The main toponym name should be in English. Unfortunatley some contributors prefer local languages. This is not a big issue as long as the names are in the alternate names table with the correct language code.
