Can anybody confirm if the secure endpoint (secure.geonames.org) is no longer free? Since today, it seems only the "api.geonames.org" end point is free. This is http (not https).

The secure service (https) was free for several years, but today the response is:

"Please provide a valid username for the GeoNames Premium Web Service or use the free api.geonames.org server. Thank you for your understanding."

I would just like to know if this a temporary bug, or is a premium account now required for the secure endpoint? Thank you for any information.

It was a temporary config issue. The secure.geonames.org endpoint is still free.

While we give a user name for that call as well.

Is this something that just takes some time for cache to be cleared or something else is going on?

I’m also still occasionally getting this response.

Getting timeout for https://secure.geonames.org since today.
