Hi,

there are over 60,000 places with nothing in the timezone field. How accurate is your "timezone by lat/long" query?, since this could be used to fill in the missing entries.

cheers

Hi Julian

The timezone field is populated by the timezone by lat/lng service, but there was a bug and it did not run for the latest batch imports. I have ran the service now and most places have now a timezone.

Hi Marc,

I've found two cities that were missing timezones:

6544075 Port d'Alcúdia -- should be: Europe/Madrid
6535662 Trappeto -- should be: Europe/Rome

I tried to update myself, but timezone is not an editable field.

Other than those two, all cities in cities1000 have timezones.

As far as I can tell, a majority of the west coast timezones are incorrect.

http://ws.geonames.org/search?q=oregon+city&maxRows=1&style=FULL
http://ws.geonames.org/search?q=eugene&maxRows=1&style=FULL
http://ws.geonames.org/search?q=portland&maxRows=1&style=FULL

Everything is coming up as <timezone dstOffset="-6.0" gmtOffset="-7.0">America/Boise</timezone> instead of America/Los Angeles like it should.

I've found this populated places without timezone:

Code:
 geo=> SELECT geonameid, country, name, longitude, latitude, population FROM geoname WHERE timezone IS NULL AND fclass='P' AND population > 0;
  geonameid | country | name | longitude | latitude | population
 -----------+---------+---------------+-------------------+-------------------+------------
    6612098 | CH | Gennersbrunn | 8.68829727172852 | 47.7124181732538 | 20
    6534807 | IT | Isole Tremiti | 15.504241 | 42.120846 | 367
    6607259 | NZ | Ettrick | 169.360862374306 | -45.6320045245211 | 50
    6607260 | NZ | Ettrick | 169.360862374306 | -45.6320045245211 | 50
    6301901 | | Camber | 0.797195434570312 | 50.9342000130637 | 1000
 (5 rows)

Is there a method to update this records? I cannot update it from the map UI.

Thanks
marc

The timezone cannot be updated with the UI. I have run a script to fix a couple of missing timezones directly on the database. The ones you mention and a couple of more places now have a timezone.

I'm seeing some issues with Timezones as well, in the Georgia area. It seems to right along a longitude border between -84.34194 and -84.34083 using a lat of 33.723 or so. do you think this is something that you can fix Marc. Thanks Mark.

Thanks Mark. There is something wrong with some US timezones at some coordinates. I will look into the problem.

Folks, I'm not sure you're including this in your investigation of this bug but it also appears that Dallas, TX and the surrounding cities are incorrect as well. They appear to be in the 'America/Indiana/Vincennes' which would place them in EST instead of CST.

Hi Marc,

Brasilia and Maringa in Brazil, maybe others too, are listed in America/Campo_Grande but should be in America/Sao_Paulo.

cheers

I have found and fixed an error causing wrong timezones for a couple of US locations. The problems Mark has reported should be fixed with this.

Dallas should also be correct now, according to this site :
http://www.worldtimezones.com/united_states/texas/dallas

Brazil is still open.

Julian

I have rerun the timezone reverse geocoding for all countries with multiple timezones.
