hi marc,

after a lot of querying around, i've managed to find a definitive and corroborated ADM1/ADM2 structure for serbia.

primary source: http://hu.wikipedia.org/wiki/Szerbia_k%C3%B6rzetei

corroborated by my serbian friends.

i'm attaching a tab-separated CSV that holds all the records to modify, delete and add. (there is a duplicate ADM2 level item, and another that needs to be added.)

before updating, please demote all current ADM2 items either to ADM3 or ADMD -- they are NOT ADM2 level items. the ADM1 division is correct; and the attached file holds the correct ADM2 divisions. there is another subdivision on ADM3 level but i couldn't get a sufficient list for that.

(basically, serbia has the voivodina and central serbia division on ADM1, and then there is grad beograd (the capital and surrounding area), and all the rest are "okrugs" (counties) on the ADM2 level. the "opstinas" are subdivisions under the okrugs and grad beograd, presumably they would be ADM3.)

also, there's a column for the hungarian (language code: hu) names of the ADM2 divisions, please insert them in the correct db.

cheers!

It is here:

The admin2 codes are official codes?

Best Regards

no, they're not, i couldn't find any official codes for ADM2 divisions (and i've tried), so far they seem to be nonexistent. in wikipedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Municipalities_and_cities_of_Serbia , see lowermost table) they are given numbers, but that's only because of the cyrillic alphabet -- they are just ordered. but then the city of belgrade doesn't have a numeric code, instead it has a special status. so i guess either numbers like that (and maybe 99 for the city of belgrade as an ADM2 div), or the abbrevs i came up would do just fine.

could you then collect the ADM2 codes for the okrugs? the complete list is huge and is in cyrillic (i can read cyrillic but not that fast), the csv is there for the download and modify and upload. i'd really like to start using serbia, but until the official ADM2 codes are used, there's little point in that. (it's only about twentysomething okrugs and one belgrade, shouldn't take too long.)

marc,

here's the definitive list of serbia's ADM2 divisions with the codes taken from lillolollo's link (the cyrillic long list), so except for grad beograd (which does not have an ADM2 level code yet it is an ADM2 level division), all codes are official. i nominate in absentia of a real ADM2 code for grad beograd the code GB.

mind you, i really had to dig deep to be able to reboot my ability to read cyrillic (esp. the serbian version). but it worked in the end.

yes, but code 0 in geonames is reserved for unknown/unassigned, so it would be a very bad idea to use 0 for grad beograd.

No exactly on holiday, but working abroad in Brindisi and of course it needs a lot of time to explore the fantastic region: Alberobello, Matera, Castel del Monte, Gargano, Trani, Bari, Gallipoli, and many many more
Next week I will be back

I have inserted the adm2 codes and the adm3 codes where I have found them with a simple name comparison. a lot of adm3 are still missing.
