A previous developer at my company made one of our internal processes 100% dependent on the geonames webservice lookup to turn coordinates into addresses. Yesterday, the geonames service was unavailable for ~60% of the calls we made to it.

I need to write a service that regularly downloads geonames data and can serve up these x,y coordinate lookups for addresses.

1. Is this possible? I do not think I see the files needed to do this from the download page: http://download.geonames.org/export/dump/readme.txt

2. Is there an open source project out there where someone already wrote this?

Thanks,
marc

I am not aware of any issues yesterday and api-status monitor reports close to 100% availability for the free services:

1. Addresses are not in the download. The download includes data we maintain ourselves.

2. I guess you are using the US reverse geocoding. You can download the data from the US Census website or get the standalone application:
http://www.geonames.org/products/reverse-geocoding.html

Best Regards

Marc

Would something like http://www.gisgraphy.com/ suit your needs?
