Postal codes are not yet fully integrated in the main geonames.org data set, they are available as separate download.
We have recently started to add IATA and ICAO airport codes as alternate names to airports with the pseudo languages 'iata' and 'icao'. In the same way we have now added postal codes for France as alternate names with the pseudo language code 'post'.

Example :
http://www.geonames.org/search.html?q=29560

As a consequence the RDF representation of the places now contain the postalCode element.
Example <postalCode>05200</postalCode>

This is a test to see whether adding postal codes as alternate names is the right way to go or whether we need a different form of integration. If this experiment with France proofs successful we will add postal codes for other countries as well as alternate names.
What do you think?

Hi, Marc:
I think it's a good idea. Using the alternateNames table, it is not necessary to change the structure of files and tables.
For me, it is perfect.
The only doubt I have:
when a city has several postal codes, in the alternateNames there will be only one postal code or several?
For example: Paris has several codes:
75001-75020 (Zone 75), Paris, and now in the alternateNames the value is 75800.
Then, for each city there will be one or several?
Thanks again for increase the data.
Regards,
Isa

Hi Isa
The number of alternate names per language is unlimited. For Paris we have alone four alternate names in French : Paris, Lutece, Pantruche and Paname. Only the number of 'isOfficial/isPreferred' is limited to one.

For the postal codes in Paris it is a little bit more complicated, because we have an entry in the geonames database for each of the 20 Arrondissements. The postal codes 75001-75020 are assigned to the corresponding Arrondissement.

Regards

Marc

Hi,

is it possible to easily query for all arrondissements of Paris, for instance ?

Thanks,
Sami
