Hello everybody,
we use the geonames database in the sense of authority data and linked data.
We have been using the database for years in various collection databases for books, archives and museum objects. If a place is linked when capturing these works, geonames will be searched and the URI and preferred place name will be saved.
We now fear that you delete records from geonames and then the URL leads nowhere. For example, this apparently happened at http://www.geonames.org/2089595 and http://www.geonames.org/6672193. This is of course a disaster for the data and an absolute absurdity. Of course, if a record is a duplicate or the like, then the URL must be redirected to the other record. It must never be invalidated or lead into the void.
You offer RDF, that's great. But in terms of this technology, the URI (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Uniform_Resource_Identifier) must never be invalidated.
Can you tell us something? Can you enlighten? Do we miss something?
Thanks and best regards, Tobias
