I've just pulled all the geonames locations that have a corresponding Wikipedia link in alternateNamesV2, and mapped them by language, revealing somewhat surprising results:



An English bias was certainly expected, but I certainly didn't expect it to be in the order of 1000x more than French and Spanish. I wonder if anyone can offer any reasons why this may be the case?

Here are the article counts:

de 1,355
es 421
fr 418
it 203
sv 192
uk 190
el 143
lt 139
nl 107
pt 66
ww 29
wi 25
no 24

We have only added the English wikipedia articles systematically.
The other languages are used only sporadically, for instance when no English article is available.
