Hi, what do you think about linking to Wikidata instead of Wikipedia?
Wikidata has permanent identifiers and links to Wikipedia articles in all languages.
See for example
https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q365

I agree with linking to Wikidata as a referral, but not more important than Wikipedia, so i think is better to give more details of what you talking about..

The Wikidata items contain links to all Wikipedia articles about the same subject.
It's easier to link to one Wikidata item instead of linking to all Wikipedia articles . Maybe it's possible to import the links via Wikidata.

you are absolutely right, this is on the todo list and has now high priority.
Both links are important, the wikipeida links and the 'link' to wikidata.
Similar to the wikipedia link the wikidataid can now be added as alternatename with the pseudo language code 'wkdt'.
A batch parsing the wikidata dump and then adding the wikidataids is in the works.
Best Regards
Marc

Thanks Marc!
Would it be possible to add those new pseudo language codes to the documentation:
* http://www.geonames.org/manual.html
* and on the "alternate names" tab of every point of reference (POR).
Following is a proposal on top of my head, do not hesitate to add more:
The language code is referring to the ISO-639-2 and ISO-639-3 codes:
* en (English)
* fr (French)
* he (Hebrew)
* uk (Ukrainian)
...
* zh (Chinese)
* wuu (Simplified Chinese)
* yue (Traditional Chinese)
* pny (Pinyin Chinese)
Accepted pseudo language codes:
* post (postal codes)
* icao, iata, faac, tcid, unlc (transport-/travel-related codes)
* abbr (abbreviation)
* link (link to the corresponding Wikipedia page)
* wkdt (ID of the corresponding Wikidata element)
* phon (phonetics)
* pinyn (pinyin)

I feel Wikipedia is a better authority to link to than wikidata

One is not exclusive from the other: we can have both links, one on Wikipedia and another one on Wikidata
