Country Data  XML

Hi

I was wondering if anyone knows on where I can find some basic country data.

For example is there any service to which I could give a country name as a parameter and have suitable latitude and longitude values returned?

For example if it was given GB or United kingdom it would return a latitude and longitude roughly in the center of the UK

Thanks
marc

Hi

I think you have already found the place where you can get this information from :

http://www.geonames.org/search.html?q=united+kingdom+pcli&country=GB

or even simpler

http://www.geonames.org/search.html?q=pcli&country=GB

There is also a bounding box available :
http://ws.geonames.org/countryInfo?country=gb

Regards

Marc

Thats great thanks, working well now.

The service is still likely to be running in 8 months sin't it? as that is when my project finishes?

Thanks Robby, you are right this does not make sense. I have modifed it to read 19.25 west and -169.05 east.

@anonymous : don't worry the service will still be here in 8 months. If you need a signed contract you can get a service level agreement, under the condition you help share server costs.

Cheers

hi

is there a csv file with country data and bounding box info

i have found http://geonames.cvs.sourceforge.net/geonames/data/countries.txt
and http://download.geonames.org/export/dump/countryInfo.txt but none have bounding box, I was wondered why there is two files and I think it would be usefull to export a csv file with all that informations in one file (if it doesn't exists )

Hi David

I am afraid there is no csv file with country bounding box information and the two files you mention have ran out of sync. Would you like to help us fix this and add the missing info from the xml file to the file in the dump directory, we could then update the csv file with this new version.

Cheers

hi

yes i will update those informations

do i have to start from the cvs file or the file in the dump directory?

the cvs file have more information, so i think it is logical to start from the cvs file, am i wrong?

i thought that the xml file was extract from a database so it would be possible to update the csv file.

cheers

ps : i will update the file asap.

Hi David

I think the file in the dump directory is more recent and the csv files has some more columns. It is high time that they are synronized again. The bounding box is indeed read from the database, but some hardcoded values had to be added for some entries. It is therefore not wrong to completely keep it in the file.
