The GeoNames web service for mapping a lat/lng to a body of water are great, but I need to do this a *lot* and don't want to go out over the web each time.

http://ws.geonames.org/extendedFindNearby?lat=0&lng=0
http://ws.geonames.org/oceanJSON?formatted=true&lat=0&lng=0&style=full

For other regions I've been using Shapefiles, but at this point I'd be happy with any kind of polygon data that details the shapes of oceans, seas, and other bodies of water.

Where does GeoNames source this data from? Is it a publicly available source?

Thanks in advance for your help!

The ocean service is using vmap data (public domain provided by the US army).

Dear Marc,

I've tried to find 'vmap data (public domain provided by the US army)' without luck.

If that would be easy for you, could you direct me to the pages with this vmap data please?

Most links nowadays seem to point to this site:
http://gis-lab.info/qa/vmap0-eng.html

The original source is here:
http://geoengine.nga.mil/muse-cgi-bin/rast_roam.cgi
Though I am not sure how to download there.

Best

Marc
