Hi,

I'm a Taiwanese, I found some mistakes on Taiwan (TW) admin divisions on GeoTree,
but I can't fix them on GeoNames. It says I don't have high enough user level.

Below is the GeoTree of Taiwan now:
  • Fukien (7280288)
    • Kinmen (1676511)
    • Lien-chiang Hsien (6724655)
  • Kaohsiung (7280289)
  • Taipei (7280290) [seat] T'ai-pei shih
    • Taibei Shi (1668338)
    • T'ai-wan (1665148)
  • Taiwan (7280291) [seat] Hualien

In fact, #1665148 was called "Taipei" (Taipei County, or Taipei Hsien*), a 3rd admin division (a child node of #7280291).
#1668338 is equal to #7280290, not the child node of it.
("Taipei City", "T'ai-pei shih", "Taibei Shi" are the same location in different translations.)**
And I found #7280289 and #1673813 are the same location in different IDs.
Finally, The seat of #7280291 is not Hualien.

* Hsien = County.
** Shih = City. Taibei = Taipei.

BTW, some 2nd and 3rd admin divisions are due to become 1st admin divisions on Dec 25, 2010:
Taipei County (#1665148, 3rd admin division) => change name as "Xinbei City" (a 1st admin division, Xin means "New")
Kaohsiung County (#6724652, 3rd) and Kaohsiung City (#7280289, 1st) => merge as one single "Kaohsiung City" (1st)
Tainan County (#1668354, 3rd) and Tainan City (#1668352, 3rd) => merge as "Tainan City" (1st)
Taichung County (#6724653, 3rd) and Taichung City (#1668392, 3rd) => merge as "Taichung City" (1st)

For the moment I think it would be useful to follow the division ISO is using: http://www.geonames.org/TW/administrative-division-taiwan.html

There is a Taipei province on level1 and two Taipei divisions on level 2 (county and city).

Thanks, but those data on the 1st table is incorrect. (2nd table is correct.)
Are they come form the ISO document?

Which "Taipei" as provincial level means "Taipei City" (TW-TPQ) in real so "Taipei City" is not under an area called Taipei.
("Taipei County" is under the "Taiwan Province")

Secondly, "Hualian" is not the seat of "Taiwan Province".
Taiwan Provincial Government is located on "中興新村" (Zhongxing Village) in "Nantou County" (TW-NAN).

Below is a part of the ISO_3166-2:TW list on Wikipedia:

Code | Subdivision name | Subdivision category
TW-TPQ | Taipei | district
TW-TPE | Taipei | special municipality

I drew an image that based on the map on the page you gave to explain it:

Thanks. I have changed Hualian from PPLA to PPLA2.

The first table is from the US government. The second is from ISO.

Is this the PPLA?
http://www.geonames.org/1677399/zhongxing.html
I don't see any buildings there, but it has the coordinates mentioned in the wikipedia article.

Oops, the coordinate on Wikipedia is wrong...
It point to a location has same name but in Miaoli County.
I have correct it now =)

This point on GeoNames (Taiwan Sheng Zhengfu) is the Taiwan Provincial Government.
(Sheng = Provincial, Zhengfu = Government)

By the way, the romanizations here in Taiwan are t-t-t-tricky, though you got most of them right. http://jidanni.org/lang/pinyin/older.html

Taichung County (#6724653, 3rd) and Taichung City (#1668392, 3rd) => merge as "Taichung City" (1st)

These changes above had been implemented on Dec 25 last year.

Result:
  • Taipei County (3rd) => New Taipei City (1st, also "Xinbei City")
  • Kaohsiung County (3rd) + Kaohsiung City (1st) => Kaohsiung City (1st)
  • Tainan County (3rd) + Tainan City (3rd) => Tainan City (1st)
  • Taichung County (3rd) + Taichung City (3rd) => Taichung City (1st)
They are no longer under the Taiwan Province.

All the townships [include urban townships (鎮) and rural townships (鄉)]
and cities (市) in those counties had been changed to "districts" (區).

For example,

Banqiao City, Taipei County (臺北縣板橋市)
=> Banqiao District, New Taipei City (新北市板橋區)

Yingge Township, Taipei County (臺北縣鶯歌鎮)
=> Yingge District, New Taipei City (新北市鶯歌區)
