According to this article (and others) Christmas Island is a territory of Australia and not a separate country http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Christmas_Island.

Is there a reason geonames has it as a country?

Christmas Island is listed as 'dependent political entity'. It is listed separately as it has its own ISO country code.
You find a list of other dependencies here:

Hello,
There is a problem with the geoname for Christmas Island. It is listed under Asia, it should be listed under Oceania > Australia.

I've embedded the geo ID on my website, but for some reason Christmas Island is tagged in King Island, Tasmania, Australia.

I can't create a new geo ID for Christmas Island, as it is to close to the other geo IDs that already exist (2078138 and 2078139). Can you please help?

Thank you!

You are right, CX should be under Oceania instead of Asia. Will be fixed.

Why do you want to create a third feature beside the admin feature and the island?

Best Regards

Marc
