Hi Marc,

2 traditional counties have been divided for administrative purposes:

* Tipperary, which split into North Tipperary and South Tipperary (1898 )
* Dublin, which split into Dun Laoghaire-Rathdown (capital Dún Laoghaire), Fingal (Swords), and South Dublin (Tallaght) administrative counties (1994)

These regions are already present on Geonames (as "Administrative Divisions").

Would it be possible to delete Tipperary and Dublin, and to promote these 6 admin division to adm1?

Regards,
Ludovic

Hi,

after you changed the 1st level admin system, the admin for Dublin City has disappeared. Would it be possible to add an adm2?

All five cities are currently missing as ADM2 (Cork City,Dublin City,Galway City,Limerick City,Waterford City).
I think we should all of them as ADM2, though in some sources (like ISO) they are not considered ADM2. What do you think?

From what I understand, ISO considers provinces (4) as level 1 and traditional counties (26) as level 2, none of them beeing official administrative divisions.

I'd suggest to stick to the official admin divisions and keep FIPS. In my opinion, it would be more consistent to have all 29 counties and 5 cities as adm1. Considering them as adm2 comes to mixing FIPS and ISO.

But if you want to keep the 4 provinces as adm1, you could just add 5 adm2 for the 5 cities.

Thanks for your feedback. The five cities have been added.

I'm offically confussed????

Looking at the IE.zip, take SWORDS as the town it has admin 1 of 'L' and admin 2 of '35'

below are the extracts from the admin1codes.txt and admin2.txt files:

IE.L Leinster

so it's in Leinster but the admin 2 codes show:

IE.L.31 Cill Mhantáin Cill Mhantain 2960935
IE.L.30 Loch Garman Loch Garman 2960963
IE.L.29 An Iarmhí An Iarmhi 2960972
IE.M.27 Port Láirge Port Lairge 2960991
IE.00.40 Tipperary South Riding Tipperary South Riding 2961189
IE.00.38 Tipperary North Riding Tipperary North Riding 2961190
IE.C.25 Sligeach Sligeach 2961422
IE.C.24 Ros Comáin Ros Comain 2961731
IE.L.23 Uíbh Fhailí Uibh Fhaili 2962187
IE.U.22 County Monaghan County Monaghan 2962567
IE.L.21 An Mhí An Mhi 2962661
IE.C.20 Maigh Eo Maigh Eo 2962666
IE.L.19 Lú Lu 2962793
IE.L.18 An Longfort An Longfort 2962839
IE.M.16 County Limerick County Limerick 2962941
IE.C.14 County Leitrim County Leitrim 2962975
IE.L.15 Laois Laois 2963031
IE.L.13 Cill Chainnigh Cill Chainnigh 2963397
IE.L.12 Cill Dara Cill Dara 2963435
IE.M.11 Ciarraí Ciarrai 2963517
IE.C.10 County Galway County Galway 2964179
IE.U.06 County Donegal County Donegal 2964751
IE.M.04 County Cork County Cork 2965139
IE.M.03 An Clár An Clar 2965479
IE.U.02 An Cabhán An Cabhan 2965534
IE.L.01 County Carlow County Carlow 2965767
IE.00.35 Fingal County Fingal County 6693220
IE.00.34 Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown Dun Laoghaire-Rathdown 6941716
IE.00.39 South Dublin South Dublin 7288565
IE.M.41 Waterford City Waterford City 7778674
IE.M.37 Limerick City Limerick City 7778675
IE.C.36 Galway City Galway City 7778676
IE.L.33 Dublin City Dublin City 7778677
IE..32 Cork City Cork City 7778678

and that's it????? so what does admin 2 of '35' mean? it's not in the list as IE.L.35? Is this a partial list?

take another exmaple: Durlas shown as admin1 of 'M' and admin2 of '26'

Again Munster for admin1 but IE.M.26 doesn't exist in the admin2 list but should I take 26 from the admin1 list??? that's Tipperary which is correct? Basically I am very confused and rather frustrated.

Does the Admin 2 code map to the numbers for admin1codes.txt apart from when it doesn't then use the code from admin2codes.txt ?????

All I want is to display town name followed by (county) so:

Durlas (Tipperary)

Anyone who can decode what has happened to these admin codes please let me know.

Thanks

New joiner here, but I'm an active 4SQ SU2, based in Ireland.

The values used by 4SQ for "State/Province" have long frustrated me, as they do not reflect the reality of postal addresses in the Republic of Ireland. However, I lived with it. Now 4SQ have enabled a translation feature which was displaying ridicously incorrect values for Ireland. So I decided to investigate.

I believe the root cause to lie with the admin2 value list for Ireland - this list currently reflects the "council" administrative level. I believe that this value set is more appropriate for an admin3 level, whereas admin2 should reflect the county structure.

For me, the logical structure of administrative areas in Ireland is
1. Province (4) - purely for geo purposes, never used for addresses or administration
2. County (26) - used for address purposes. It's the major used division in Ireland
3. Council - essentially the current admin2 list. Some counties have two councils (i.e. Tipperary & Dublin). In other cases, the city and the county have different councils. These divisions are purely administrative and are never used for addresses.

Also, the use of English and Irish language versions and naming standards is inconsistent.

Hi Dudara

I am not familiar with foursquare. I know they are one of our users among apple, nokia, microsoft, cnn, bbc, etc. I therefore don't know what 'translation' feature you are speaking of and what it has todo with geonames.

We are using the provinces as first level and the counties on second level. I am aware that the provinces do not have real administrative function, that they have more some kind of traditional meaning.

In any case, even if we wanted to change it and promote the counties to first level it would be difficult for lack of good data sources. We happen to have boundary data for the provinces but we do not have boundary data for the counties and other Irish features.

The boundaries are available for download here:
http://www.cso.ie/en/census/census2011boundaryfiles/
Unfortunately the license is restrictive and we are not allowed to use this information. If you want to do your country a favour you can plead with the authorities to release the data under less restrictive licenses. Best would be something like the data provided by Ordnance Survey in the UK. I am sure sooner or later they will follow this path an release the data under more open licences, the result of the restrictive licenses is that most global platforms have to make do with other data sources.

Regards

Marc
