Thanks for a very impressing project.

I have done some swedish language updates on cities, one that had an old name that nobody uses anymore, so I think others agree with that.

But then I saw two swedish alternate names on another city, one is correct and the other is some extra variant, which I got annoyed over that it came into the geo search result.

How do you handle multiple alernate names in same language because they seem to have no good priority? What about disagreement between users, who is right and wrong in this geowiki-database? How about some comment when editing data so you see the reason?

kind regards
Tomas

Hi Thomas

We have a section in this forum to discuss issues on toponyms :
Discussion of Geonames Toponyms
http://forum.geonames.org/gforum/forums/show/8.page

A link to the forum is displayed on the toponym balloon :
http://www.geonames.org/maps/geonameId=6252066

So far this is an experiment to see how useful this kind of feature could be and it is not very advanced. You have to create a topic in the forum and I will manually link to it from the toponym balloon.

For alternate names we have a flag in the database "isOfficialName", the flag however is not yet editable with the userinteface. We mainly use if for batch updates if we have an official source with a lot of names.
Other flags we are discussing are 'is short name', 'is long name', 'is colloquial name', ...

Kind Regards

Marc
