Hello,
Going on "google map" could take some time if we want to add many entries.
Would it be possible to give a CSV files to update many cities/mountain that could be inserted into you database?

Hi Gabriel
You are completely right, the google maps interface is only good for few entries.
If you have many entries you can send a csv file via email to me and I insert it with your userid. But don't forget we can only insert files, which are not falling under the copyright of some one else.
Regards
Marc

I'm interested too, but, well, maybe I missed something, but where can I find a template/schema/whatever for the csv file?

Hi Bernard
We don't have a fully automated batch upload mechanism yet. So any format will do. You can send it to my email address : marc@geonames.org
The simplest format is simpilar to the columns of the main dump :
Code:
name : name of geographical point (utf8) varchar(200)
latitude : latitude in decimal degrees (wgs84)
longitude : longitude in decimal degrees (wgs84)
feature class : see <a href="http://www.geonames.org/export/codes.html," target="_blank" rel="nofollow">http://www.geonames.org/export/codes.html,</a> char(1)
feature code : see <a href="http://www.geonames.org/export/codes.html," target="_blank" rel="nofollow">http://www.geonames.org/export/codes.html,</a> varchar(10)
country code : ISO-3166 2-letter country code, 2 characters
cc2 : alternate country codes, comma separated, ISO-3166 2-letter country code, 60 characters
admin1 code : fipscode (subject to change to iso code), isocode for the us, see file admin1Codes.txt for display names of this code; varchar(20)
population : integer
elevation : in meters, integer
timezone : the timezone id (see file timeZone.txt)
Cheers
Marc

OK. I suppose that if at some point we agree upon an ontology, A RDF file would be OK.

The original message dates back to 2006, so I was wondering if there is now a way to do batch uploads? I have about 2500 places derived from historical maps of Ukraine. I would like to add places not currently available in GeoNames, and to add historic names from the maps for places that are already in GeoNames.
